'Queer Activist History & Television'
Wednesday 26 February 2025, 5-7pm | Hybrid
On Wednesday 26th February from 5-7pm GMT, we will be collaborating with UoB's Pop Culture Theory Group for a screening followed by a discussion.
Taking inspiration from this year's LGBTQIA+ History Month theme (activism and social change) and considering its relevance in discussions of pop culture, we will be watching the second episode of Visible: Out on Television (2020), a documentary made for Apple TV+. You might also want to read Julia Himberg's 'The Television-Industrial Closet', from Television Studies in Queer Times, which discusses the documentary (but it's not mandatory!). Content warning: in the documentary, queerphobia including violence and death; in the reading, references to suicide. During the session, you're welcome to leave the room at any point if you need.
This event is hybrid. For those joining us in person, we will be in Arts 104 (snacks provided!). For those joining online, the we'll be starting the discussion call at 6pm GMT. You can watch the episode yourselves via a 7-day free trial of Apple TV+. To recieve the link, please click the 'Join Us' button below.
'(In)visible Asexualities'
Friday 7 March 2025, 12 - 2.00pm | Hybrid
On Friday 7th at 12-2 we will be holding an asexuality-themed research forum, consisting of a lightning talk panel followed by a discussion.
Recent years have seen a growth in asexual scholarship, but asexuality nonetheless often remains an afterthought in discussions of queer theory and histories. This session, featuring presentations by researchers specialising in the early modern to the present, seeks to explore histories, presents and futures of asexuality in a variety of settings and forms.
This event is hybrid and open to everyone. For those joining us in person, we will be in Frankland 2124 at the University of Birmingham (snacks provided!). If you plan to join us online, please fill out this form to receive the zoom link: https://forms.gle/BuEinnUc1feSAQJU6
(Registration for in-person attendance is not required, but is helpful with catering numbers!)
